The Making a Living Flowchart offers individual artists and collectives a best practice model for responding to invitations by potential clients, employers and collaborators by asking when does an ‘Artist Commission’ or ‘Opportunity’ get the MaL Seal of Approval? The diagram was developed in the context of our research into making the MaL Seal of Approval and takes inspiration from the Precarious Workers Brigade’s ‘Bust your Boss’ card, a pocket-sized reminder that we have the right to address issues of payment and labour when meeting with potential clients or employers (http://precariousworkersbrigade.tumblr.com/Toolbox) and Reko, an independent art project in Sweden that has created a ‘fair trade’ brand for art institutions based on a survey on the working conditions of artists exhibiting in national art institutions (http://www.projektreko.org/).
MaL is an independent group of arts professionals currently active across the UK who are researching and campaigning on issues of art and labour.
